- Caregivers who can share their homes with individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities.
- Foster parents for children in court-ordered foster care
- Parents who can adopt children from the child welfare system.
Caregivers and foster parents are paid for room and board and for their work, with higher pay rates for more challenging adults and children. Pay is generally exempt from income tax. The county pays for healthcare expenses for the adults and children placed in your home. Other expenses are reimbursed to caregivers and foster parents. Subsidy payments for adopted children are provided by the county.
Individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities are placed in Lifesharing, which is a residential service where caregivers help individuals reach their potential in all aspects of daily living. These placements may continue for many years. Foster children are placed for shorter periods and may become available for adoption. Many adoptions start with foster care while our adoption workers prepare the family and the child for adoption. Family Care Services provides training and assistance with placements including respite breaks. Knowledge about parenting or mentoring would be helpful.
Homes must be located in Pennsylvania and within 70 miles of Chambersburg. Homes may need to have private bedrooms available. Caregivers and foster parents must meet State and agency regulations and must complete physicals, background checks, and pre-service training.
